In 2013, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong first announced The Greater Southern Waterfront (GSW). It is made up of 30km of coastline spanning from Pasir Panjang to Gardens By The Bay. This 2,000 hectares of land is six times the size of Marina Bay or twice the size of Punggol.
During the National Day Rally 2019, the Prime Minister revealed more plans for the Greater Southern Waterfront, including new attractions, offices, and housing projects.
Already, new mega housing projects such as Normanton Park and Kent Ridge Hill are sprouting along its coastline.
The island nearby – Pulau Brani – would also be re-developed into a large recreational facility. In addition, two former power stations nearby would also be re-purposed.
Below is a brief introduction about the GSW. What’s especially exciting are the 9,000 proposed public flats that will take the place of the current Keppel Golf Course.
The Greater Southern Waterfront stretches from Pasir Panjang to Gardens by the Bay East, and goes through these places:
- Normanton Park
- Pulau Brani
- Pasir Panjang Terminal
- Pasir Panjang Power District
- Keppel – Labrador
- Mount Faber – Harbourfront
- Tanjong Pagar and Keppel Terminals
- Cruise Hub at Straits View/Marina South
- Gardens by the Bay East
As the Prime Minister has put it, there will be “more live, work and play” elements at the GSW by taking advantage of the long coastline and spaces freed up after the shift of the port from Tanjong Pagar and Pasir Panjang to TUAS.
More “live, work and play” will be realised through:
- More office spaces, more job opportunities to those living in the vicinity;
- More waterfront housing options with lots of open spaces and promenades; and
- More entertainment and recreational for residents.
In Part 2 of our introducing the the Greater Southern Waterfront, we will delve into more details.
